Clean Hydrogen: Powering a Low-Carbon Future
Benefits of Converting to Hydrogen-Compatible Turbines:
- Lower carbon footprint: Hydrogen is a clean-burning fuel that produces zero carbon emissions when combusted. By retrofitting gas turbines to run on hydrogen, power plants can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to ongoing efforts to combat climate change.
- Fuel flexibility: Your turbine will be able to run on 100% methane gas to 100% hydrogen.
- Efficiency gains: Hydrogen has a higher energy content per unit volume than natural gas. With PSM power retrofits, plants running can achieve higher power output and improved efficiency.
- Reduced maintenance: Upgrades designed for durability and uptime
- Asset Optimization: By upgrading your existing turbine for enhanced operational and clean fuel flexibility, equipment can be profitably repurposed and future-proofed for decades to come.
- Energy independence: Hydrogen can be produced locally from diverse sources
- Grid stability: Clean firming and peak support during high demand

Hydrogen Explained: Color Spectrum Overview
The energy industry uses color-coded terms to describe various hydrogen production technologies and their environmental impacts. Each color in the hydrogen spectrum represents a distinct production method. Here's a brief overview of the different types of hydrogen:
Grey
Grey hydrogen
- Source: Natural gas via steam methane reforming
- Emissions: High CO2 output
Blue
Blue hydrogen
- Source: Fossil fuels with carbon capture
- Emissions: Low CO2 emissions
Green
Green hydrogen
- Source: Renewable energy via electrolysis
- Emissions: Zero Carbon
Pink
Pink hydrogen
- Source: Nuclear-powered electrolysis
- Emissions: Zero Carbon
Turquoise
Turquoise hydrogen
- Source: Methane pyrolysis
- Emissions: Solid carbon byproduct (low-emission potential)
How PSM Converts Gas Turbines for Natural Gas And/or Hydrogen use
- Assess turbine compatibility: The first step is to determine whether the gas turbine is compatible with hydrogen. This involves analyzing the turbine's design, materials and operating parameters to ensure safe operation with hydrogen fuel.
- Modify the fuel system: The next step is to modify the existing fuel system to accommodate hydrogen. This involves either modifying or replacing the natural gas with a fuel flexible supply system. This encompasses installing a blending and delivery system.
- Upgrade the combustion system: Retrofit/Install a PSM Flamesheet™ or LEC III™ combustion system.
- Test and commission: Systematically test the upgraded turbine to ensure safety, efficiency, and performance improvements, including emission reductions.
PSM's team of specialized engineers and technicians guides customers through the conversion process. A comprehensive assessment of the plant and decarbonization goals determines the scope of the conversion.
